Beginning in 2005, MMC led Yorkdale Shopping Centre’s 1.6-million-square-foot landmark expansion. The project, which was guided by the vision of reimagining the typical mall experience in an urban streetscape setting, included the development of a structural glass roof over the main mall.
This redevelopment of Yorkdale became a catalyst for refinishing and refurnishing the centre’s entire common area, a project that culminated in the 2012 southwest expansion, which was distinguished by its simple yet striking design. Clerestory windows, skylights, and dynamic storefront design allowed the renovations to feel consistent with the high-end streetscape aesthetic established in the previous redevelopment. The project’s success was reflected in the arrival of new luxury retailers, many of whom opened their first Canadian stores at Yorkdale.
Another vital component of the expansion is the two-level underground parking garage, accessed via glazed escalator court. The heated garage incorporates the latest technologies, including a parking space detection system. Further enhancing the convenience and comfort of the customer experience, a valet parking facility—which has seen incredible success since opening—was also incorporated into the design.
These features continue to make Yorkdale Shopping Centre the premier fashion destination in Toronto.
